Merkley Comments on Post Office Decsion

The U.S. Postal Service has dropped plans to close small rural post offices.  Several in Eastern Oregon were on the original closure list.  Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden both supported a postal reform bill which included restrictions on closures.  The bill passed in the Senate and is awaiting a vote in the House of Representatives.

Planning Commission to Consider Broadband Site, Professional Office and Lot Changes

When the Baker City Planning Commission meets next Wednesday, May 23, it will conduct hearings on three requests:

  • a request by Dave Davis for a  conditional use permit to construct  a radio site for broadband internet services east of Vista Heights Drive.
  • a request by J. Robert Moon for a conditional use permit for a profession office in a residential area at 2646 Main Street
  • a request by Landmar Construction for a re-plat for 6 lots to be changed into 5 parcels located at 2985 and 2965 Walnut St.

Also on the agenda will be a tennis use agreement and discussion of possible Development Code and Comprehensive Plan updates.

The Commission will meet in the City Council Chambers at Baker City Hall beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Road Closure and Mental Health Discussed at Commission Session

Sometimes its not what’s on the official agenda that counts most.  During their meeting on Wednesday, Baker County Commissioners heard a report from Treasurer Alice Durflinger, approved a services agreement with Judy Barzee, and appointed Nancy Rorick to the Powder Basin Watershed Council.  But two other issues took more time and brought more public comment.

An imminent B.L.M. (Bureau of Land Management) road closure in Grant County brought out activists who have been waiting to see the next chapter in the Forest Service road saga in this area.

The other issue drawing strong interest was the future of mental health services in Baker County.  Although commissioners had planned earlier to discuss the issue, it was not put on the agenda because preliminary meetings with stakeholders had not been held.  However, a number of interested parties attended Wednesday’s session, so the item was discussed.

Baker City Clean-up Update

Baker Middle School leadership students, local service organizations and other volunteers will spread out on Friday to help clean up Baker City.  The focus areas will be the library and parks along the Leo Adler Memorial Parkway.  Volunteers are asked to meet at the gazebo in the Geiser Pollman Park at 10:00 a.m. to kick off the event.

3-D Archery Shoot to Benefit Cancer Society

The Elkhorn Archers and Marvin Wood Products Relay for Life teams will hold a “3-D Shoot for a Cure” on Satuday, May 19, at the 3-D Course on Washington Gulch.  All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Chet Smith to Share His 101 Years f History

Chet Smith, who has lived in Baker County for his entire 101-year life, will share his experiences during a presentation at the Baker Heritage Museum on Monday, May 21, at 7:00 p.m.  The event is in part a birthday celebration for Smith and is sponsored by the Baker County Historical Society.
